Why Family Medicine: I enjoyed having a continued relationship with patients over the years and getting to follow up on all of their health needs. I also liked seeing patients of all ages. I did obstetrics for some time and still do some inpatient, so I enjoy the opportunity to do medicine in multiple settings.

Why UNM-SF FMRP: I have been in New Mexico working at UNM in Albuquerque previously. I enjoy the SF program because it is smaller, and you are able to connect with people more in the program due to its smaller size. It is a great community setting and Family Medicine is the only residency in the Santa Fe facility, so you can learn in that setting while also having the first year learn in an academic center to get both teaching opportunities.

Why Medicine: I loved the challenge of trying to figure out what is going on and the science of medicine. I also loved that it allowed me to work with people and provide a service to my community.

Favorite thing(s) to do in Santa Fe or New Mexico: Hike- lots of beautiful places, go to all the art museums, and walk around old town and see all of the amazing art.

Favorite Restaurants in Santa Fe: Jambo Cafe, Izanami

Hobbies: Oil painting, hiking, kayaking, and hanging out at home watching tv.

Fellowship: Contra Costa/UCSF Global Health Fellowship (POCUS Certification; International work with Partners In Health in Malawi and Mexico) Why Family Medicine: I have always been drawn to caring for families in all settings and listening to people’s stories—helping to advocate for their health and wellbeing.

Why UNM-SF FMRP: I chose to join the Santa Fe program because it’s located in a beautiful setting that combines academic and rural training in a 1+2 model. It provided me the opportunity to lead the Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and Practice Management curricula, while precepting at the Christus Family Medicine Center clinic. I love working with residents and learners, and I believe representation in medicine truly matters.

Favorite thing(s) to do in Santa Fe or New Mexico: Enjoying the outdoors with my husband Charles and our golden doodle Oban, trying new restaurants, and exploring used bookstores for hidden gems.

Katie Doster, DO

I wanted to address the social factors affecting health which involve families and generations, so family medicine seemed the natural route. I also have am passionate about evidence-based, family focused obstetric care and love prenatal care, attending births and caring for their children. Why UNM-SF FMRP: This residency attracts a unique group of residents who are committed to providing full-spectrum care, including obstetrics, to underserved communities. I love working with the residents to further their personal and professional goals. Santa Fe has such a rich history, culture and landscape (nestled between the southernmost tip of the Rockies and NM desert). Interests in Medicine: prenatal care, obesity medicine, substance use treatment, outpatient procedures, health policy Favorite Things to Do in Santa Fe or New Mexico: ski and hike with my husband and 2 dogs (the ski resort is only 30-50 minutes away!), trying new restaurants, going to the weekly farmers market. Emma Goodstein, MD

Hometown: Portland, Oregon Undergrad: Wesleyan University Medical School: Emory University School of Medicine Residency: University of Arizona Family Medicine Residency Why FM: I love seeing whole families in the clinic and the hospital, which I think is a particularly important part of care for folks who have difficulty accessing care. Family medicine’s focus on the whole patient, social determinants of health, and social justice is unique in the field of medicine and one of my favorite parts about the specialty. Why UNM-SF FMRP: I think training in a 1+2 program offers the best of both worlds, and our program offers flexibility to craft the kind of residency residents are looking for. Gary Giblin, MD

Dr. Giblin has been practicing Family Medicine since 1995. He went to University of New Mexico for medical school and has a special interest in maternal and child medicine and in hospice care. Dr. Giblin is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.

Sue Katz, MD, MPH

Dr. Katz received her medical training at University of California, San Francisco and her Masters in Public Health at University of California, Berkeley. She recently celebrated her twentieth year at La Familia in 2010. Dr. Katz is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. I have stayed at La Familia because it allows me to have a full family practice including prenatal care, well-child, women’s care, adult medicine and geriatrics. This family medicine practice has given me wonderful opportunities to know and support families through health and illness – from managing pregnancies to visiting people in nursing homes.

Mathew Schmidt, MD

Dr. Schmidt received his medical degree from the Kansas University School of Medicine in 2009. He completed his residency at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver, Washington and Portland, Oregon in 2012. I am excited to join an organization that seeks to provide for the healthcare needs of all members of its community. As a primary care physician, I look forward to developing relationships with patients, caring for their whole families and hearing their stories. I have a special interest in working in with pregnant women, children and sports medicine.
